Rarotonga is the largest island and the capital island of the Cook Islands. It is considered to be one of the top tourists’ destinations of the Cooks. The island is dotted with beautiful tiny beaches, has various hotels of different levels, luxurious resorts, and all the facilities for active rest. The chief International Airport of the Cook Islands is located at Rarotonga, so all the visitors, coming to the country, arrive at Rarotonga. The Aitutaki Island is another popular spot for the tourists. Undoubtedly, it will become the highlight of any visit to the Cook Islands. This territory is also known as Utataki, Ararau or Araura. Palm dotted beaches, spectacular islands and turquoise central lagoon made the island one of the best holiday destinations. Without any doubts for most people the lagoon is the major draw. The Atiu Island, belonging to the Southern Islands group, attracts the visitors by its volcanoes and beautiful coral reefs. For many centuries this area was not so famous beacuse of its local wars, but nowadays the island is characterised as the most ecofriendly and environmentally minded of all the Cook Islands. It is the only one of all the Cook Islands, where the visitors can experience a traditional ceremony tumunu, which looks like the kava-drinking custom.

These days, being the second biggest island of the Cooks archipelago and at the same time the oldest island in the Pacific, the Mangaia Island is one of the leading destinations for the tourists from all over the world. The perfect attraction of the island is its rich wildlife. Moreover the tourists have the possibility to explore the burial caves and ancient coral roads. For the history fans the island offers marae (ancient meeting grounds), as well as some of the finest churches in the Cook Islands, built in the Missionary period, which are interesting to discover. If you prefer to enjoy the beauty of the nature, visit the Mauke Island, which is usually called “a garden island”, because of its lush green landscapes, especially thick forests of casuarina, palm, banyan, and barringtonia trees. The Mauke Island is not to be missed, if you are looking for seclusion and solitude.
